  8. relating to Usenet news with answers. Part 2/2. The items are in no
  9. particular order.

  16. me. Instead post your questions to a suitable Usenet newsgroup like
  17. news:news.newusers.questions. It is much more efficient than asking
  18. me by email. I'd like to help, but because of my many activities I
  19. am very pressed for time. I prefer to pick the questions I answer on
  20. the Usenet news. Thus I can answer publicly at one go if I happen to
  21. have an answer. Besides, the newsgroups have a number of other
  22. readers who might know a better or an alternative answer. Don't be
  23. discouraged, though, if you get a reply like this from me. I am
  24. always glad to hear from fellow Usenet news readers.

  57.  A: Let me try to give hopefully helpful information about how best
  58. go about making test postings. Please don't take offense by this
  59. item. It is solely meant as friendly guidance so that you can better
  60. find your way on the net.
  61.    Novice users, and sometimes even others, occasionally place these
  62. "A test, please ignore" messages in discussion newsgroups. Please
  63. don't do this. It is wasteful of the resources. These news reach
  64. tens of thousands of readers, so a very wide distribution is
  65. involved. Furthermore, many users find the test messages very
  66. annoying in the discussion newsgroups, and you have a good chance of
  67. getting some testy email.
  68.    There is a much better solution for the testing. There are
  69. special test newsgroups just for this purpose, such as alt.test and
  70. misc.test. The misc.test is a good option, since there are several
  71. test echoes along the feed. They will automatically send you
  72. email acknowledgements when your test posting reaches these sites.
  73.    If you just wish to test posting without the automatic
  74. acknowledgments to clutter your mailbox, check if your site has a
  75. newsgroup simply called test. Thus don't necessarily start with a
  76. newsgroup with a "world" distribution right away. First consider
  77. experimenting with a "local" newsgroup, and think of expanding only
  78. after that, if this still is necessary. If you look at the header of
  79. a Usenet posting, you'll notice that it includes the a line for
  80. distribution. Don't trust it. The distribution limitation is not
  81. guaranteed to work. In global newsgroups a local distribution can
  82. easily "leak" since not all configurations along the feed observe
  83. this feature. Thus the distribution field in the header is best left
  84. unchanged.
  85.    Another method. If you want to suppress the autoresponders along
  86. the feed, include the word "ignore" in the "Subject:" header of our
  87. articles posted to *.test.
  88.    Additional information to neophyte news users from Jim Wamsley
  89. wamsley@dcsun1.stortek.com. "When testing your ability to post to
  90. newsgroups, test first to your local.test newsgroup. This posting
  91. should appear only on your news server. When you are satisfied that
  92. you are comfortable with postings, you can try some of the many test
  93. news groups on the network, such as alt.test and misc.test. However,
  94. do not include local.test in these postings. When you include
  95. local.test and another newsgroup, not only is your article posted on
  96. *.test and your local.test, but in every other local.test on every
  97. news server in the world. This tends to upset news administrators
  98. and on occasion has them chasing a problem that really doesn't
  99. exist."
  100.    If you are a news or a system manager who has had to do the test
  101. this way for practical reasons, my apologies if this advisory note
  102. was not appropriate in the case of your test. This was only meant as
  103. benevolent advice in case you were not aware of these alternatives.
  104. On the other hand, a responsible and knowledgeable system manager
  105. could, of course, indicate why the global test posting was necessary
  106. in the first place and cancel the test posting as soon as it is no
  107. longer necessary to circulate it to the tens of thousands of Usenet
  108. readers subscribing to the discussion newsgroups.
  109.    News administrators might also be interested in the newsgroup
  110. misc.test.moderated run by Ian Phillipps. An extract from its
  111. charter: "The group misc.test.moderated complements misc.test, by
  112. providing a way for news administrators to test the mechanism for
  113. posting to moderated groups."

  115.   A2: Here is a very important little tip when you have made your
  116. test posting in the proper newsgroup. Take a careful look at the
  117. "From:" header of your test posting. Your full email address should
  118. appear in there, like mine would show up (without the quotes) as
  119. "From: ts@reimari.uwasa.fi (Timo Salmi)" If not, you have a serious
  120. problem, since other users will not be able to reply to your
  121. postings by email. In that case contact your own site's newsmaster
  122. a.s.a.p. alerting him/her to the problem.

  144. both on the Usenet news and by email, one sometimes omits the
  145. coating, and concentrates on the essential, for better or worse.
  146. This may convey an unintended impression of unfriendliness, which

  148.    A related matter is that I have often posted or emailed a pointer
  149. to the answer by referring to my Frequently Asked Questions and
  150. other collections or programs, rather than the actual, full answer.
